Last night my dad and I went through the neighborhood selling raffle tickets for the July 11 Sounders game. I'm going to go to other Newcastle neighborhoods this week.

Tonight is our second People to People planning meeting. I competed my Health and Nutrition test AND my Sports Leadership test! The assignments and the tests are all part of helping us perpare for the trip.

First Orientation Meeting!

Last Sunday I went to our first People to People orientation meeting at the NewportYacht Club. I didn’t know so many kids from Washington were going to Austria. We all did a "get to know each other" game where we had to find people who answered questions like, "do you have any pets?", "have you traveled to a foreign country?", "what's your favorite food?". We all got into it. I was so happy to meet some of the other athletes, and now there will be some kids I’ll know when I go to Austria!

I had to leave early to get to our game at Starfire, but my mom helped by staying for the rest of the meeting so I could find out what I missed. The next meeting is in May.

Part of my preparation is to get certified as a Sports Ambassador - there are TESTS!!! I took quiz on responsibility for going to Austria and what to look forward to in Austria. I got a hundred percent on the second try. Also, I'm working on my physical training. We need to be fit and healthy to have enough energy to play soccer AND go sightseeing after training. All athletes need to stay fit and healthy to have enough energy to have FUN.

Sounders FC wins 3-0 over NY!

Sounders FC just won their first game of the season, 3-0, against New York Red bull. The game was really intense. I was on my toes nearly the whole game! Kasey Keller, the Sounder’s goalie, who played in Europe for ten years, had two amazing saves. (Dad reminds me he grew up in Lacey WA where my grandparents now live)

I brought one of my teammates, Tenley, and one future (hopefully) teammate, Sam :-) . We saw one of the most amazing saves in the second half. One of the Red Bulls shot from above the 18 yd box. The shot was going to the top of the goal. Kasey backed up to his line and dropped his hip back and pushed the ball over the net. I could not believe it.

That is one of the keeper moves I am working on. To see it happen in a game perfectly was a dream.

MLS Cup in Seattle!!!!

While we headed up to ski at the Summit yesterday my dad got an email from the Sounders FC that the MLS championship game will be in Seattle. COOL! We also got our ticket package from the Sounders this week. The scarves are great. I'm looking forward to going to the opening game next Thursday. My brother can't go :-( he has a 3rd grade musical that night. I think I get to invite a teammate to go with me and dad! It's gonna be FUN.

Playing Up and Playing Keeper

On my Newport teams I’ve been playing up 1 age division. But this winter in indoor, at Starfire, I play up 2 age divisions. I play goalie for at least half of the game. Next season with Newport FC I’ll actually get to play in my own age division. That will be fun, but I’ll really miss my teammates!

A lot of players think goalie is a hard position and a lot of girls are scared of the ball being kicked at them.

I have had a lot of help from Jeff Koch, Newport FC’s keeper coach. He played professionally on the Tacoma Storm (he also coaches one of the boy’s teams). He’s been great about teaching me how to play keeper.

Austria - Skiing and the Danube

(I asked my dad to write this while we walked to the bus stop this morning)
Two mornings a week I get up early to take the Middle School bus to orchestra. My dad found the Universal channel about a month ago, and we've watched some of the World Cup skiing from France, Germany, and Zauchensee AUSTRIA!!!!! I like watching Bode Miller, and especially Lindsey Vonn http://www.lindseyvonn.com/ .

The pictures from Austria werebeautiful. I'm really looking forward to July. Too bad I can't ski there too!

This morning my dad tuned to a program on PBS about the Danube River. I didn't get to watch all of it, but I learned that Vienna (where I'll be staying) used to be a Roman outpost on the river. I'm looking forward to learning more about the history of the city.

Sponsor Form Link

The Sponsor Form is now available at:
http://home.comcast.net/~briancurl/pledge_form_2009_vienna.pdf

Jaz will be working on juggling her soccer ball. If you're not familiar with soccer juggling, it is consecutive touches with feet, thighs, head... no hands, before the ball touches the ground. It's a great way to develop first touch skills, and it helps with conditioning, balance, and focus.

Her current record is 14 touches, and her goal is a combined 100 touches in her two best tries at a practice in late April. Her Newport FC teammates will keep count.

She's hoping you'll download the Sponsor Form and consider supporting her efforts as a Sports Ambassador!

Jasmine Selected as a 2009 Sports Ambassador!

This evening Jasmine found out she was selected as one of the 1,000 US Athletes attending the Vienna games (VERY excited)! She is looking forward to meeting other members of the Northwest delegation, preparing for the July games, and meeting other athletes from around the world.

After her initial nomination Jasmine had to request letters of recommendation from her coaches (other than me) and teachers who rated her soccer skill, leadership abilities, sportsmanship, etc. Her evaluation continued in an interview with the program coaches on a snowy day at a local Starbucks. The whole process was a little intimidating for an eleven year old!

Look for more posts coming from Jasmine in the next few days, including information on her "Touches Peace" sponsor program.
